Beautiful and sturdy (and not too complicated)

My rapidly growing seven year old was asking for a new bed, a bunk bed of course. His cousin (and others) often sleep over and his previous double captains bed was great for this. I was hesitant to order a full sized bunk bed for him so I started researching loft beds and low loft beds. This model would fall into the former category. It is not quite as tall as a full bunk bed, but still rests over five feet in the air for the top bunk. I am always hesitant making furniture purchases online as buying something this large and expensive can be quite daunting. My qualifications for the bed were that it needed to be solid wood, attractive and functional.

Thankfully, Amazon and 'Mom's Bunk House' came though with flying colors. The unit is solid wood, no press-board here. The finish (I purchased the darker stain) is rich and well done. The item arrived in the specified period (it was actually a few days early, however due to a snafu with the local delivery company we received it a day or so late) and was in immaculate condition. Not a scratch or blemish on it. The seller, when I had to call in regards to the shipping status was extremely prompt and very helpful. Be forewarned, this is a large item, and is definitely a two person job to put together. I had help the day it arrived, and from start to finish I would estimate that it took us three hours to have it fully assembled. The only tool that we used (aside from the provided wrenches) was a battery powered drill. There are a few connections that require drilling as opposed to simply following threaded holes.

The directions can be a little hard to follow, also make sure that you open everything. In our case some of the bolts for the top bunk were in with the ladder (which we saved to do last) and we thought they were missing. Still, I can say overall this purchase was another excellent one from Amazon. They have this priced better than anyone on the net, and if you are looking for a good solution for a child or even teen I would not hesitate to recommend this product.

Good quality

We really like this bed and love it's space saving design. This is perfect for them plus I like the look of it. It doesn't look like some of the cheaply made sets. It took my husband and I about 3 hours to put the whole thing together. I really liked the way it was packaged with each box having its own hardware and assembly instructions. There were even red ribbons attached to the hardware packets that you couldn't miss once the box was open. I chose this set over other similar sets because it was real wood and the fact that we did not need a bunky board. I only gave it four stars though because a few of the pieces had some dings and scratches in them.

Flexible combination

After looking extensively for a loft bed solution for my 3rd grader, I landed on this hybrid twin-over-twin solution. It successfully manages the limitations presented by a number of others:

The first challenge with many loft beds is their height. The problem is that the top "bunk" needs to be high enough to make the space underneath useful, but the result is often too little space above if the room has only an 8' ceiling. With a total height of 62.5", this bed leaves a reasonable clearance to the ceiling.

Some beds dispose with the ladder in favor of a stairway at one end. While perhaps safer, the stairway at the end of the bed requires a fair bit of crawling along to actually exit. Most kids probably won't mind, but I'm not convinced that this approach is any safer than a side-mounted ladder. The ladder on this bed can be fixed in place or left free to move (we've done the latter). The caution here is that the ladder hooks are metal, which can damage the wood on the frame. After seeing some scratches, we've lined the inside of the ladder hooks with felt.

The least expensive loft beds are sparse frames, which by necessity of design, incorporate fewer structural elements and are therefore less stable. This design utilizes "boxed" sections at each end to provide more stability (though the structure still moves a little when my child crawls in and out). I intend to revisit how tight everything is after a few months, and may add a reinforcement or two to the back side.

The trundle bed is a non-attached (and non-essential) part to this bed. We have a soft armchair underneath the loft, and will assemble the trundle before the next guest comes to stay, but the option to add the second sleeping space (with another mattress, of course) is very attractive at the holidays.

Storage space is good; it appears that we may not need another dresser in the room, at least not immediately. We don't use the desk function as a working desk, however.

Finally, it is important to know that there is some real assembly work to be done here. Delivery (sale through Mom's Bunk House) was on a pallet, and the total weight of the parts is not insubstantial. The assembly instructions are clear enough, and the job took two of us about 3 1/2 hours, but it does require some moderate physical strength (think of lifting the top bed platform onto the dresser/shelf/desk supports) and a certain level of endurance.

In short, we are well-pleased with this bed. The finish is attractive (though the stain did off-gas a mild odor for the first 10 days or so), and the construction is real wood. It fits the space well, and our only real problem is that there are now some green-with-envy siblings. Should that continue, we will purchase the identical bed again!
